Why speed matters: Winning the race to capturing your global digital audience

Speed has always mattered in sports content.

Whether it's alerting fans that their team has scored, getting pictures to air first or breaking transfer news before anyone else, being first has always created competitive advantage.

Today that matters more than ever because audiences no longer decide what they watch. Increasingly, algorithms do.

Changes in sport content consumption over the last decade have been dramatic.

Research from Deloitte has found that more than 90% of Gen Z sports fans consume sports content on social media, while younger audiences are significantly less likely to rely on traditional live broadcasts as their primary means of following sport.

Meanwhile, industry surveys show growing demand for short-form and on-demand content, with highlights and social clips becoming an increasingly important entry point for fan engagement. Altman Solon's 2024 Global Sports Survey found that two-thirds of sports executives are concerned about younger audiences increasingly choosing highlights, short-form video and related content over watching full live matches.

This isn't simply a shift towards shorter content; it's a fundamental shift in how audiences discover content.

Increasingly, fans aren't actively searching for highlights. Recommendation algorithms are deciding which highlights they see. That seemingly subtle change has fundamentally altered the value of publishing quickly.

The first-mover’s advantage in a scroll-first world

YouTube Shorts now generates around 200 billion daily views, making competition for early distribution between publishers extremely important.

Unlike traditional broadcast viewing, where audiences actively search for content, today’s digital platforms serve content to users based on relevance and timing.

As highlighted by industry consultant Dawid Prokopowicz, who at the 2026 Opta Forum compared audience behavioural habits when consuming long-form and short-form YouTube content, short-form consumption is driven less by viewer intent and more by discovery: “someone’s going to serve the menu for you.”

This distinction changes everything.

Being first to share genuinely viral moments is a crucial catalyst for growth. Recently the NHL reportedly gained 42% follower growth (+161k followers) in 36 hours from one viral moment.

For years, publishers competed to produce the best highlight - increasingly, they're competing to publish the first good highlight.

Recommendation algorithms reward early engagement. Content that reaches audiences first begins accumulating views, shares, comments and watch time while interest is at its highest. Those early engagement signals often continue to be amplified by the platform.

By the time another publisher uploads the same moment, much of that opportunity has already passed.

Being first is no longer simply an operational advantage, it's a distribution advantage.

How much is a minute worth?

For years, the industry has accepted that publishing highlights quickly matters, but very little effort has gone into quantifying the value of those few minutes.

So earlier this summer, we decided to test it.

We built an automated analytics pipeline that detected 2026 World Cup highlights uploaded to YouTube by two different broadcast rights holders covering identical fixtures.

We captured public YouTube view counts via the YouTube Data API, and measured performance against publication timing.

In an initial sample of six matched fixtures, one rightsholder published first every time, with the other uploading an average of 23.4 minutes later.

That seemingly small delay coincided with a significant difference in audience performance.

While being a small sample size, the initial findings are compelling. Across those six matched fixtures:

The broadcast rightsholder who posted first accumulated 7.38 million tracked views compared with 1.64 million for the other rights holder - a 4.5× difference.
On average, videos for the first publisher reached 1.48 million views per match, compared with 327,000.
Looking specifically at the four matches where a full 24-hour comparison was available, the first publisher averaged 1.64 million views after 24 hours versus 356,000.

Using a typical sports YouTube RPM (Revenue Per Mille) of approximately $4–5 USDs as a benchmark, these viewing figures equate to an estimated $29.5k–36.9k in advertising revenue for the broadcaster who published first, compared with approximately $6.6k–8.2k for the other.

Whilst the actual revenue will vary depending on geography, audience mix, ad inventory, watch time and monetisation settings, this exercise demonstrates the potential commercial value of publishing earlier.

Publishing speed has tangible commercial value, but it also raises an important question: if publishing just 23 minutes earlier can coincide with 4.5x more views, where are those 23 minutes being lost?

The Opta difference: speed and scale

One of the biggest challenges facing creators today isn't simply publishing highlights quickly.

It's producing, adapting, approving and distributing them consistently across an increasingly fragmented digital landscape.

Official league, club and player-owned channels are now competing alongside broadcasters and publishers for the same audience at the same moment.

Publishing across multiple platforms.

From speed to strategy

Reaching your audience first is also not just about faster clipping; it is about rethinking the entire content strategy.

Short-form highlights act as the “hook”—the entry point into a broader content ecosystem. When delivered quickly, they capture attention at the moment of peak emotional engagement. From there, publishers can guide fans toward deeper content: analysis, longer-form video, or community engagement.

But without that initial timely touchpoint, the opportunity is lost.

Moreover, speed unlocks new monetisation pathways. The faster content is published, the greater its relevance, and the higher its commercial value—whether through sponsorship integration, ad revenue or audience growth. Indeed, according to Deloitte, highly engaged sports fans spend six times more than casual fans.

The link between technology and commercial outcomes is also becoming increasingly clear. Stats Perform's research found that organisations already utilising AI are three times more likely to report that content commercialisation has become easier compared with organisations yet to adopt AI-powered workflows.

The next competitive advantage: speed at scale without sacrificing quality

As digital platforms continue to prioritise immediacy and relevance, the importance of speed will only intensify. AI-driven workflows, automated clipping and data integration are rapidly becoming essential tools—not optional enhancements.

The organisations that succeed won't simply be those producing the most content they'll be those consistently producing the right content, at the right moment, before everyone else.

AI won't replace editorial creativity - it will remove unnecessary delay. Trusted data won't replace storytelling - it will make storytelling faster.
