As 2020 draws to a close we look back on what’s been, in so many ways, a truly unforgettable year of sport. Here’s our rundown of statistical highlights you may have missed…

After putting US sports under the microscope with 20 facts that may have passed you by in 2020, we turn our attention to sport across the world.

In football, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ended 30 years of hurt by winning their first league title since 1990. In Formula One, Lewis Hamilton was dominant again in 2020, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record for seven world titles. In America, it was business as usual in the NBA as Lebron James won yet another NBA Championship, and earlier in the year, Patrick Mahomes led his Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl.

But aside from the obvious headlines, here are 20 statistical highlights from the across the globe that may have passed you by…


In October 2020, Los Angeles became the first city in MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL history to win two titles in the same calendar month (Lakers & Dodgers).


LeBron James of the Lakers became the first player in MLB/NBA/NFL/NHL history to win the Championship MVP award with 3 different teams. 


In 2020, Freddie Freeman of the Braves finished in the top 4 in the majors in runs, hits, doubles, RBI and walks. Since RBI became an official stat in 1920, the only other player to finish in the top 4 in MLB in all of those categories was Lou Gehrig in 1927.

Back in March 2020, Western United FC became just the second team in A-League history to score 5+ goals in back-to-back games (Melbourne City in Nov-Dec 2015).


2020 saw Joel Kiviranta of the Dallas Stars become the first skater to score a hat trick in a Game 7 since Wayne Gretzky in the 1993 Conference Finals. 


Before beating Olympiakos in December, Marseille lost 13 consecutive Champions League games, the longest losing run of any team in the history of the competition.


The 2019/20 campaign saw Bayern Munich become the first team to win all of their games (11) in one season of the Champions League, extending that streak into 2020/21 and a record 15 game-winning run.

On September 8th 2020, Eduardo Camavinga (17y 303d) became the youngest player to play for France since 1914 (Maurice Gastiger 17y 128d).


Stuart Broad is the only bowler to pick up 30+ Test wickets in each of the last 10 calendar years (2011-2020).

2020 saw Steven Gray (Peristeri) become the first player to get an efficiency rating of 45+ in a BCL game (47), scoring 39 points (including a joint-record 10 3-pointers), making 7 assists and 5 steals in less than 30 minutes spent on the court against Rytas Vilnius in October 2020.


49% of all metres made by Keaon Koloamatangi in NRL 2020 came post-contact, the highest proportion of any player to have made at least 50 runs this season.


Cristiano Ronaldo is the first player in history to score 50+ goals in Serie A, La Liga and Premier League.


In her 50th appearance, Vivianne Miedema became the first player to score 50 FA Women’s Super League goal.


Back in September 2020, against Chelsea, Liverpool’s half-time substitute Thiago completed more passes (75) than any Chelsea player managed in the entire match. Since full passing data is available for the Premier League (2003-04), his 75 successful passes are the most by a player who played a maximum of 45 minutes.


Of players to make 100+ tackles in the PRO14 in the 2010s Jonny Gray recorded the best tackle success rate (99%), missing just 13 of 1006 attempted tackles, including 170 tackles without a single miss in 2019.


Katy Daly-Mclean retired in 2020 after winning 116 caps for England. Sarah Hunter (123) and Rocky Clark (137), both for England, are the only women to win more caps for any nation.

At the 2020 T20 World Cup, Heather Knight and Natalie Sciver posted the highest ever third-wicket partnership (123 runs) by England in Women’s T20Is, and the highest of any team at the Women’s T20 World Cup.


In 2020 Sergio Ramos played his 177th game for Spain, becoming the male player with the most international appearances for a European nation, surpassing Gianluigi Buffon (176).


Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs averaged 399.5 passing yards per game in November 2020, the most passing yards per game by any QB in a single month in NFL history (minimum 4 games played).


In 2020 Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th goal for club and country, with 10% of those being scored for Juventus.
