Key Points:
Ranked by league position, this table outlines teams’ performances in front of goal, from both open play and set piece situations.
Atalanta’s ability to generate high quality chances from open play was demonstrated by them amassing an xG output of 60.7 from 532 shots. Napoli posted more shots than Gian Piero Gasperini’s men, but the quality of Atalanta’s shot locations meant they exceeded Napoli’s open play xG output by over 15.
33% of Brescia’s xG came from set pieces, the highest ration in the league. Lazio and Parma sat at the other end of the spectrum, having generated 85% of their xG output from open play.
As well as generating the highest open play xG, which they outperformed by nearly 10 goals, Atalanta also ranked joint first in xG from set pieces. They exceeded their output by three, giving them a total of 19 goals arising from set play situations.
In addition to Atalanta, Inter and Lecce also overperformed their set piece xG by two clear goals. In contrast nine teams underperformed by at least two goals, but this number didn’t include any of the teams who finished in the top seven places in the league table.
