OptaPro publishes emerging talent season review

By: Andy Cooper

As clubs around Europe return for pre-season, OptaPro has published the first of a number of analytical season reviews for 2018/19.

After publishing reviews for the 2018 MLS and NWSL campaigns during the winter, these summer reports apply a number of innovative frameworks created by OptaPro to provide performance insights on key performers.

This first review focuses on emerging prospects, all aged under 23, who were involved in seven European domestic competitions last season: Danish Superliga, Belgian Pro League, Ligue 2, Portuguese Primeira Liga, Eredivisie, 2. Bundesliga and the Spanish Segunda Division.

Findings identified in the review include:

– Holstein Kiel’s German U21 forward Janni Serra had the highest xG per shot output across all the competitions analysed.

– PSV left back Angeliño’s expected assist output per 90 was the highest of all defenders and fourth overall.

– New FC Schalke 04 goalkeeper Markus Schubert recorded a season goals prevented total of 8.3 for Dynamo Dresden in 2. Bundesliga.

– Steven Bergwijn was involved in 98 Eredivise shot-ending sequences without being the shooter or the shot creator.

You can read the full review here, which includes a number of interactive tables and graphics across each criteria.

The next two publications, focusing on the 2018/19 English Premier League and Championship campaigns, will be published on the OptaPro website later this week.
