For approaching 30 years, Opta data has been at the forefront of empowering broadcasters, rights holders, publishers and brands to tell deeper, more engaging stories to create greater stickiness both in the leadup to matchday and when the on-field action unfolds.

Now, following the introduction of OptaAI earlier this year, these storytellers are being equipped with a wide range of advanced and predictive AI metrics, all trained on Opta data, which are enabling them to deeply explain key on-field events, the significance of each pass, and the implication of every goal. It is enabling them to take their football coverage to the next level – enriching the in-game experience, keeping audiences engaged for longer and facilitating global debate via their digital channels.

We have assembled a guide which highlights twenty (yes, twenty) different ways our advanced Opta and OptaAI insights are being used by leading broadcasters and digital storytellers to differentiate their coverage and deliver the powerful, underlying football insights that their audience crave. You can download the full guide by completing the form at end of this feature.

To give you a quick taster, here are five examples of what is covered in the guide:

1. Identify players progressing the ball forward with Line-Breaking Passes

Line-Breaking Passes Explained

Using Opta Vision location data for all 22 players in a game, we capture every situation where a player’s pass successfully breaks the opposition’s forward, midfield or defensive line.

This data can be used to rank the players who complete the most line-breaking passes in a competition, as well as highlighting players who either regularly create chances by breaking the opposition’s back line, or at the other end of the pitch are capable of playing through an opposition’s press.

Line-Breaking Passes in Action

As European club men’s football paused for the spring international break in March 2024, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka had made 579 line-breaking passes, more than any other player across the big five European leagues. This insight was picked up by Leverkusen’s social media team, who shared it with their global followers.

Line-breaking passes are broken down in more detail in our explainer video, which includes more real-life applications.

2. Compare the teams in the relegation dogfight with League Predictions

League Predictions Explained

Opta’s Supercomputer simulates the final outcome of every league game, tens of thousands of times, to attribute the overall probability of every team’s final league position.

League Predictions can be used to illustrate the impact of the weekend’s results on the title race – as well as other key battles including the race for the Champions League and the battle to avoid relegation.

League Predictions in Action

League predictions have been used to great affect by broadcasters around the world, including Sky Sports in the UK. In the build-up to the Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United last year, pundit Gary Neville used a combination of Opta insights and predictions to explain why Forest had been given such a high percentage chance of being relegated, which was displayed in an on-screen table.

More details on how League Predictions are calculated can be found via Opta Analyst’s Premier League pre-season predictions for 2024-25.

3. Use Pressure Intensity to highlight how aggressive a team looks to win back possession

Pressure Intensity Explained

Pressure intensity is an Opta Vision metric which automatically identifies when defensive players approach the player who has the ball, with the aim of winning the ball back or limiting their pass options.

Using pressure intensity we can identify the players who commit the most high-intensity pressures for a team, which demonstrates how influential certain players are off-the-ball to try and force a turnover. In addition, the metric can also be used to highlight how high-pressure intensity impacts a player’s passing performance – does a player give the ball away more frequently when they are put under high pressure?

Pressure Intensity in Action

During Euro 2024, the BBC used pressure intensity on multiple occasions to support their pre-match analysis of players. In this example, they highlighted how N’Golo Kanté had made more high pressures in France’s opening two games than any other player, reinforcing the importance of the defensive aspect of his on-field role.

4. Use Live Win Probability to highlight the impact of goals

Live Win Probability Explained

The Opta live win probability model updates in real-time following key events, such as goals and red cards, to deliver a probability prediction of the final match outcome (home win, away win or draw).

Live win probability is particularly engaging during live broadcasts, where producers can display on-screen graphics as goals are scored or when full-time approaches to highlight the most likely winner. It can also be replicated across digital channels, to signpost followers to the live broadcast.

Live Win Probability in Action

Eleven Sports, the official broadcaster of the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium, is using live win probability as part of their live in-game coverage. In this example they highlight how with less than seven minutes remaining, STVV has only a 2.9% chance of scoring twice to salvage a draw against Standard Liege.

5. Use Momentum to illustrate changes in attacking threat on a match timeline, live

Momentum Explained

Part of Opta Predictions, momentum is the dynamic capture of changes to a team’s momentum in real time, based on which team is most likely to score at any point in a game.

Presented on a match timeline, momentum tells the story of a game in a way that is instantly understandable. It is particularly effective at enhancing in-game broadcast coverage, where producers can display a momentum timeline at relevant times, as well as post-match via social channels.

Momentum in Action

The Swiss Football League is publishing post-match momentum graphics on its official social feeds, enabling fans to get a better understanding of how momentum fluctuated between each team following every game played on a Credit Suisse Super League matchday. The graphics are created by the league’s in-house media team using a customised template in Opta Graphics.

Opta Analyst has produced a momentum deep-dive, which explains how the model records changes in team momentum.
